i saw the graphic above on twitter … so i decided to go … dialed the number … made reservations … and got the tickets … hand delivered by Sali’s manager Koji …

then i braved the quezon city payday saturday traffic to get to the cafe … little did i know then … that i would be in for a one-of-kind amazing night …

so i set up the gear … yup … there will always be gear … and sat back … and expected a run of the mill saturday night gig …

it was full house BTW …

first up was … kerith …

moira dela torre followed … her song “Love Me Instead” always captures a crowd … she also performed “Chasing Rainbows” … a song which she wrote in 15 minutes …

then we had “alasmedya” …

something unique followed … i was expecting a musical number but we got … sofia paderes and her “spoken word” … it’s like poetry reading … without the reading … she does another “spoken word” towards the end of the show … listen to her “Letters to Burn”

miss cathy go followed … definitely one of the highlights of the night … her performance was a rare treat because she was accompanied by guitar and violin … listen to her sing “hanggang ngayon” and “alon”

another of the night’s surprises was the ransom collective … a six piece band … cooperative drumming … a xylophone … an electric violin … folk songs … what’s not to like? … i couldn’t make out whether the songs are scottish or irish-inspired … but i definitely enjoyed them …

we were then treated to “coffee shop music” by clara benin … she performed her original songs “Naked”, “Dust” and “Blameless” …

then for the night’s main event … we had the eponymous band Sali … yup … eponymous is a big word and i am using it loosely …

“Sali” is a contraction of the words “salt” and “light” … their tagline reads “we light up and add flavor to the music of this world” …

They performed the original songs “How to Take”, “So Sweet”, “Tulog Na”, “Losing This Battle”, “All I Need” and “Pikit” …

My fave of the bunch was “Losing This Battle” … Click on the link to listen to it …

The crowd favorite was “Tulog Na” … Click on the link to listen …

Sabu is Sali’s lead singer … she has a jovial voice … and moves that teeter between theater and Broadway …

by the end of the show … we had witnessed original performances that we simply could not have seen anywhere else … there were different genres … different styles … different instruments …

it was simply refreshing to see performers doing their thing … their own thing … with no one telling them what to do … i drove away with a light headiness … because i had seen what could be done if talent was simply allowed to play itself out …

i am looking forward to the sequel of this production … the producers hinted at making it a monthly or semi-monthly affair … the only challenge i can see for them … is that the bar has been set pretty high on the very first show … that it would take a lot of work to surpass it …
