flyer MINT

Mint (definition from  www.urbandictionary.com )
1. A flavour, based on Mint leaves.
2. A hard candy of above mentioned flavor.
3. A place where coins are made.
4. Collector-speak for something in perfect condition.
5. Something cool, spiffy, sweet, excellent.

it’s not everyday that an invitation to watch music artistes perform at MINT college comes along … so when an event like this comes along … one simply has to go …

i could drone on about how classy and dope the campus is and how the MINT Playhouse is the perfect place for any music performance … but i won’t … i’ll just leave you with a link to their webpage

surprisingly … the event started exactly on time … 5pm sharp … that made things easier for those who made the effort to be early …

first up was Clara Benin with Poch … both resident artistes of MINT college … we were treated to a mashup of “Evidence” and “Oo” followed by Clara’s original “Blameless” (click here to watch a video of the performance) … the set concluded with another Clara Benin original “Dust” …

next up were The Chimichangas … an almost all-female quartet … given to flippancy, railing and innuendo … some of their songs are kinda NSFW-ish … so here is a video of their cover of “Firewoman” which is SFW …

The all-male The Adamant followed … the lead singer clearly wins the best-dressed male of the night award … they performed a cover of “Tayo Na Lang Dalawa” and a couple of their originals …

DSC_1577_DxO10then we had Attic Wench … they performed their originals “Hole in the White Ceiling”, “Reborn” and “Infinite” …

DSC_1583_DxO10who is this guy? why is he wearing a Guy Fawkes mask? this is a mystery that needs solving …

DSC_1595_DxO10whoever he is … he plays the guitar for “Dissonance” … “Dissonance” is a seven piece ensemble (the drummer and keyboard person are not visible in the photo) … their sound is well … “dissonant” … it filled me with existential angst and melancholy … they performed in dim red light with very little audience engagement … this added to their “dissonant” theme …

they played what seemed to be a couple of originals and a kundiman

the name of the next band really cracks me up (until now) … “Banna Harbera” is a spoonerism of “Hanna-Barbera” … a famous cartoon studio from the last century …

DSC_1641_DxO10it is difficult to watch “Farewell Fair Weather” and not be changed … their music is simply top-notch … the soulfulness of their music and the attention to detail is just plain amazing …

DSC_1799_DxO10capping off the night was “Jensen and the Flips” … fresh from their “Honeymoon” album launch … their electronic R&B Motown sound whipped the crowd into a dance frenzy … but not me … real men don’t dance …

looking back … the night was just plain hassle-free fun … the producers simply delivered what they promised … “on time” … that’s important to me …

i loved that the MINT playhouse had beanbags instead of chairs … so everyone was chill and seated/reclined … no crowding nor tiptoeing needed to watch … just be there and enjoy the show …

i did get to see the “future of OPM” … from coffee shop music … to kundiman angst … to electronic R&B … it was something refreshing and exciting to see … i can almost see a future when our OPM artistes would have equal footing with their western counterparts … except for Taylor Swift of course …

if you’ve made it this far … thank you … now go watch Mr. Robot
